Beginner Friendly Guide to Starting Hydroponics

There has been a lot of talk in gardening circles which concerns hydroponics. This is a relatively new way to grow plants and has only recently hit the mainstream. There was a time when hydroponics was only used commercially to grow profitable crops and this is largely because a hydroponic system was too big, too bulky, and too expensive to have in the home.

These days hydroponic systems are much smaller and more affordable than they have ever been before, making them an excellent alternative to growing plants outdoors. The truth is many people do not have the outdoor space that would be required to grow a garden full of edible plants.Import this is down to the fact that many people are living in urban environments with apartment living being one of the more accessible forms of housing in the country.

Many people who find themselves without a garden or living in an apartment with only very limited or communal outdoor space can find that hydroponics allows them to have the garden of their dreams. The great thing about hydroponics is the fact that a system only needs to be as big as you need it to be, and as the grower you have complete control over how big or small your system is and what you would like to grow in it.

The benefits of hydroponics over traditional gardening

There are lots of benefits that make using hydroponics a more attractive prospect than other types of gardening in many instances. First and foremost, as previously mentioned hydroponics is a growing method that is open to people who do not have access to outdoor space. A lack of outdoor space no longer needs to be a barrier to having a garden and enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits that come from spending time around plants.

The mental health benefits of growing your own plants are another reason to give hydroponics to try. It has long been established that tending to plants, spending time with them, and actively caring for them has a positive effect on our mental health and well-being. For starters it has been shown to reduce stress levels, but it is also a highly satisfying hobby that brings many people joy.

There are many practical benefits to choosing hydroponics, for instance plants grown using this method tend to be stronger and have a larger mature size, and will produce more usable crops than field grown counterparts. The ability of hydroponically grown plants to produce larger yields makes this growing method highly attractive to people who want to get the most out of their plants. It is also much easier to manage plants which are grown hydroponically because they don’t require much maintenance in terms of applying pesticides and removing weeds from the grow area.

Basic hydroponic equipment

In order to be a successful indoor gardener you will need to make sure your plants have sufficient hydroponic grow lights and enough space to develop into their full mature size within the system. LED grow lights are some of the most energy efficient and cost-effective Solutions you can choose for your hydroponic system, so you can also choose CFL or fluorescent lights if that’s what you prefer.

If you are planning to set up a deep water culture hydroponics system then your plants will be happy to grow in large buckets or a large plastic trough as long as it is large enough to accommodate the full sized roots once the plant has reached its adult size. One thing to keep in mind when choosing deep water culture hydroponics systems is that plant roots still need oxygen in order to grow. Without oxygen the plant roots will rot and the plant will die, so you will need to ensure the water container is sufficiently oxygenated by installing aeration pumps.

Many hydroponic growers like to house their system within a grow tent though these are not completely essential. If you are growing plant species that require very high humidity it is often best to place them within a grow tent as this will help keep humidity levels very high without the risk of mould forming on your home’s infrastructure.
